Broadcast: England meets VegasBy Kurt and Shawn Foster If Las Vegas was cool, or cooler in the way that it’s not. So not cool, like the Peppermill Lounge, that it is cool. Are you following so far? Well if Vegas was this brand of cool across its vast madness, minus the circus and pyramid etc., then Broadcast would be its theme music. Every building you enter would have tracks from Ha Ha Sound blaring. They would define your experience, create the memory of your time spent and deliver the atmosphere for a perfect evening out drinking anything on the rocks and smoking cigarettes from a silver case. In a music world filled with the 80's relived bands, self-absorbed anthem rock, and Emo, Broadcast takes us to a new, but somehow familiar place. With tracks like 'Before we Begin' I'm cast back to riding in my Grandfather’s 1972 Cadillac listening to Hugo Montenegro ...more
Simon Raymonde Talks about Bella Union PB: When you are deciding whether to sign a band what helps you to make the decision? SR: Sometimes it takes a while to sink in. I need to have it on in the car a lot as well. I make a copy of the CD and take it in the car and go for a long drive somewhere on my own. At the time Silver Surfer had released 3 EPs on their own Tyrannosaurus Records. What came across clearly then already was that Silver Surfer are...more
Interpol on Neil Diamond, Terrorism, and East Coast vs. West Coast Interpol Interview - September 15th, 2002 by Ryan Carroll I'm underneath The Blackbird, in Portland, OR, with Carlos from Interpol. We're behind the stairs talking in semi-darkness, trying to avoid extraneous noises. Carlos - Did you read the press about us here? The girl actually thought I was a vampire. RC - Oh, I'm sure from all the Joy Division stuff. Carlos - It's weird. Amongst ourselves the words themse...more
The All Girl Summer Fun Band Tell Us About Their Summer The All Girl Summer Fun Band are based in Portland. Their most recent self-titled CD, out on K records is a fun, poppy number in the vein of 60’s girl pop, but with an edge. They sing about love, boys, and other odd topics with a hilarious sense of tongue in cheek humor. I caught up with AGSFB right as summer was ending, before their show at The Crystal Ballroom with Helio Sequence and The Shins. We met after sound chec...more
